Preview a name, two names or a name with a date in script, old English, typewriter and fine line lettering. Downloads are plain PNGs of the lettering, meant for you to show your artist.

How do you use the name tattoo generator?

  1. Type one or two names

Enter the name, add a second name if you want a pair, and check the letter-by-letter spelling line.

  2. Pick a layout

Choose one line, two names with an ampersand, stacked, with a heart, with infinity, or with a date in Roman numerals.

  3. Compare the lettering

Filter by style, compare the name in each font, and download the PNG of the one you like to show your artist.

How do you choose lettering for a name?

Start with how long the name is and where it will sit. A name of 4 or 5 letters can take a bold blackletter or a heavy script. A name of 10 letters or more needs a narrow, even face, or a long placement, because wide letters get small fast.

Script looks personal but joins letters together, so a double letter or a crossed t is where mistakes and blur show first. Capitals in a serif or typewriter face are the most forgiving: each letter stands apart. Try the same name in 3 or 4 styles before you settle, and look at the lowercase and capital forms, not only the first letter.

The previews here use real tattoo-friendly open fonts, so what you see is the shape of the letters. Your artist may redraw them by hand, with line weight chosen for your skin. Treat the PNG as a brief, not a final stencil.

Where do name tattoos work, and how small is too small?

Names are a line, so they want a line of skin. The inner forearm, the wrist, the ribs, the collarbone and the side of the finger all give a name room to run horizontally. See forearm, wrist, ribs and finger tattoos for how each placement ages, and the tattoo pain chart for what to expect while it is done.

No standard sets a minimum height. What decides legibility is the gap between letters and the weight of the line: ink spreads slightly under the skin over the years, and thin, tight lettering is what runs together. A practical test is to print the name at the size you have in mind and read it from an arm's length. If you cannot, make it larger or choose a heavier font. Fingers and hands take the least detail, so keep names there short and bold.

How do you check the spelling before it is permanent?

  1. Read the letter-by-letter line this tool shows, which keeps each capital as it will be set, and compare it with how the person writes their own name.
  2. Check accents, hyphens, apostrophes and double letters one at a time. Some fonts draw an accented letter without its mark, so look at that preview closely.
  3. Ask the person the name belongs to, or someone who knows it well, to confirm in writing.
  4. Give your artist the spelling as text and ask to see the stencil on your skin before the first line.

Stencils are where most name errors are caught, so do not skip the last step even when the name is short.

What are good name tattoo ideas by relationship?

Meanings are personal, and what suits one person can feel wrong to another. These are common starting points, not rules.

Children

Parents often choose a first name with a birth date in Roman numerals, or a first name stacked over a middle name. A name with a small heart is a quiet option. If more children may follow, a layout that can be added to, such as names on a line or branch, avoids redoing the first one.

Partner

Couples often prefer initials, a shared date or two names joined by an ampersand over a single name, because a symbol keeps its meaning if circumstances change. Many artists will talk through this with you, and it is fair to take time before you decide.

Parent or grandparent

People often use handwriting taken from a card or letter, which keeps the person's own hand. Take a clear photo or scan to your artist. Our generator uses fonts, so for handwriting your artist should trace the original.

Memorial

A name with a date in Roman numerals is a common memorial form, and so is a name with an infinity sign. Give yourself time before booking, and choose a placement you will be glad to see every day.

Want the name inside a bigger picture, such as a rose, a banner or a wreath? Image generators often get letters wrong, so add the exact name from here to any design, including one from the AI tattoo generator. For a date on its own, use the Roman numeral tattoo generator, and for other words try the tattoo font generator.

Keep a new tattoo out of direct sun while it heals, as the Cleveland Clinic advises, so the fine lines of a name stay sharp.

Not sure how small a name can go? Check it against everyday objects in the tattoo size chart, then read our guide to tattoos with meaning before you book.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best font for a name tattoo?

It depends on the name and the skin. Script looks personal and suits short and medium names on a long placement such as the forearm or collarbone. Old English is dense, so it suits short names. For a long name, a plain serif or typewriter face keeps the letters apart, which helps as the ink softens. Compare your own name in each style above before you decide.

How small can a name tattoo be?

There is no official minimum, because it depends on the font, the line weight and the body part. Thin script and tight letter spacing blur first. Print your name at the size you want, hold it at arm's length, and ask your artist for a stencil on your skin before any ink goes in.

Where do name tattoos work best?

Long, narrow placements give a name room: the inner forearm, the wrist, the ribs, along the collarbone or down the side of a finger. Hands and fingers fade and blur faster than most places, so choose short names and heavier lines there.

Should I tattoo a partner's name?

It is a personal call, and many people prefer a symbol, initials or a date that keeps its meaning if the relationship changes. If you do choose a name, a layout that can be woven into a larger design, such as a heart or a banner, is easier to adapt later than a name alone.

How do I make sure the spelling is right?

Check the letter-by-letter line this page shows, then write the name by hand and have the person it belongs to confirm it. Accents, hyphens and double letters are the usual slips. Bring the confirmed spelling to your artist as text, not only as an image.

Can I put two names and a date together?

Yes. Choose the With a date layout: the names sit on one line joined by an ampersand and the date sits below in Roman numerals. Decide the date order before you book, because Roman numerals do not show which part is the month.
