Sagittarius Tattoo Meaning and Design Ideas

By the TattooDesigner editorial team · Reviewed

A Sagittarius tattoo marks the ninth zodiac sign, the archer, whose dates run about 22 November to 21 December in tropical astrology. It is shown as an archer, a centaur, a constellation or the arrow glyph. Astrology is a cultural tradition, and the tattoo does not depend on it being true.

What does a sagittarius tattoo mean?

  • The archer

Sagittarius is Latin for archer. In astrology the archer is said never to fail in hitting the mark, which is linked to the idea of prophecy and to the claim that seers and prophets are born in this sign. Many wearers use the image to say they aim high or keep their eye on a target.

  • The centaur

In mythology Sagittarius is usually shown as a centaur, half human and half horse. Some identify the figure as the centaur Chiron, tutor of Jason, while another tradition names the satyr Crotus, whom the Greeks credited with inventing archery. A centaur tattoo often means a mix of wildness and learning.

  • The constellation

Sagittarius is also a constellation in the southern sky, listed by the astronomer Ptolemy in the second century, and the center of the Milky Way lies in its westernmost part. A star-map design is a way to honour the sign without drawing a figure, and it ties the tattoo to the real sky.

  • The glyph

The astrological symbol for Sagittarius is an arrow with a short crossbar. It is the simplest form of the tattoo, a single diagonal line and a barb. It reads clearly even at a very small size.

Where does the sagittarius symbol come from?

Under the tropical zodiac the Sun is in Sagittarius from about 22 November to 21 December. In sidereal astrology the dates are roughly 16 December to 14 January, and the Sun appears in the constellation itself from about 18 December to 18 January. In tropical astrology there is no correspondence between the constellation and the sign, so check which system your birthday uses.

The Babylonians identified the constellation as the god Nergal, a centaur-like creature firing an arrow from a bow. The Greeks adopted the figure as a centaur. In astrology Sagittarius is a fire sign, ruled by Jupiter and counted among the mutable signs. These are the conventions of astrology and not findings of science.

What should you know before getting a sagittarius tattoo?

  • Check your sign by the date. Birthdays near 21 or 22 December, or 22 November, can fall in the neighboring sign, because the exact moment shifts a little each year.
  • Astrology is a cultural tradition with a long history. A zodiac tattoo is a personal identity mark, not a claim that it predicts anything. Wear it for the meaning it has for you.
  • A constellation of thin lines and dots needs sharp spacing. Ask your artist to keep the dots large enough to stay round as they spread over the years.

Sagittarius tattoo questions

What are the dates for Sagittarius?

In tropical astrology, which most Western horoscopes use, Sagittarius runs from about 22 November to 21 December. Sidereal astrology gives roughly 16 December to 14 January. The exact dates shift by a day depending on the year, so check your birth date.

What does a Sagittarius tattoo symbolize?

The archer, who is said never to miss his mark, and the centaur, half human and half horse. In astrology, Sagittarius is a fire sign ruled by Jupiter. Wearers often use it to say they aim high or hit their mark, but it is a personal reading.

Is the Sagittarius symbol an arrow?

Yes. The astrological glyph is an arrow with a short crossbar, pointing diagonally upward. It works well as a small tattoo because a single line and barb are easy to read at a very small size.

Is Sagittarius a centaur or an archer?

Both. Sagittarius is Latin for archer, and in mythology the figure is usually a centaur. When it is drawn as an archer the figure is human, and when drawn as a centaur it is bestial. Astrology treats both forms as the same sign.

Is astrology scientific?

No. Astrology is a cultural tradition, and it is generally classed as pseudoscience. This page treats the zodiac as symbolism and history, not as a claim that the stars predict anything. A zodiac tattoo works as an identity mark and does not need the claim to be true.

Where is the best place for a Sagittarius tattoo?

A glyph or a small constellation suits the wrist, ankle or collarbone. A centaur needs room and does well on the back, thigh or forearm. Long thin shapes like the bow and arrow follow the line of a limb naturally.
