Where does the semicolon symbol come from?
Project Semicolon was started in 2013 by Amy Bleuel as a tribute to her father, who died by suicide in 2003. It describes itself as a mental health and suicide prevention organization focused on the struggles that often come before a crisis. It is a nonprofit based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and serves people worldwide.
The tattoo movement took off in early July 2015, when people began posting photos of their semicolon tattoos on social media to show solidarity with those living with mental illness or suicide loss. Bleuel died in 2017, and the organization continues the work she began.
What should you know before getting a semicolon tattoo?
- The semicolon is widely recognized. People may ask about it or assume they know your story; it's okay to answer briefly, or not at all.
- Very small marks on the fingers or the side of the hand can blur or fade quickly. A slightly larger semicolon on the wrist or forearm keeps its shape longer.
- A tattoo can be a reminder, but it is not a substitute for support. Project Semicolon is not a crisis service; if you are in crisis in the US, call or text 988.
